Executive summary

The AI Innovator publishes news, analysis, and commentary about artificial intelligence. ChuuniX developed a website chatbot that helps its readers do two things: understand the article they have open and find other relevant articles from the publication.

The assistant combines current-article summarization, article discovery, and Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG). Rather than relying only on a model’s general knowledge, it uses retrieved publication content to ground its responses. The implementation includes Upstash and Gemini embeddings.

The challenge

A news assistant needs to do more than produce a shorter block of text. It needs to understand the reader’s immediate context, help them explore the publication, and keep its answers connected to the content it serves.

Start with the article already open

A reader looking for a summary is already engaged with a specific story. The assistant needed to work with that article, making its key information accessible without requiring the reader to move the text into a separate tool.

Help readers find relevant coverage

One story can lead to a broader question or a related topic. The assistant needed to help readers find relevant articles within the publication, extending the interaction beyond a single page.

Ground answers in publication content

A general-purpose model’s knowledge is not the same as the publication’s reporting. The assistant needed a way to bring relevant content into the response process so its answers were grounded in the material readers came to explore.

The solution

ChuuniX built an assistant within The AI Innovator’s website, bringing summarization and article discovery into the same conversational experience.

Current-article summaries

The chatbot summarizes the article the reader currently has open. This provides a concise overview of the story in context, while the full article remains available for the reporting and detail behind it.

Relevant article discovery

Readers can use the assistant to find relevant articles from The AI Innovator. The conversation becomes a way to explore more coverage, rather than ending with a summary of a single story.

Retrieval-grounded responses

The implementation uses Retrieval-Augmented Generation: relevant publication content is retrieved and supplied as context for the model’s response. This grounds the assistant’s answers in the publication’s material instead of relying solely on the model’s general knowledge.

What the project delivered

The AI Innovator gained an on-site reading assistant with two connected paths: summarize the story in front of the reader, or help them find relevant coverage to explore next. RAG provides the content-grounding approach behind its responses.

The project brings AI into an existing publishing workflow with a defined reader-facing role. It supports both understanding an individual article and discovering more of the publication’s work through conversation.

Frequently asked questions

Which article does the chatbot summarize?

It summarizes the article the reader currently has open on The AI Innovator’s website.

Can it help readers find other articles?

Yes. The assistant can find relevant articles from The AI Innovator, helping readers explore coverage beyond the story they are currently reading.

How are its responses grounded?

It uses Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) to bring relevant publication content into the model’s response context. This gives the assistant material from the publication to work from rather than relying only on general model knowledge.

Which technologies are part of the implementation?

The implementation includes Upstash and Gemini embeddings, alongside the chatbot’s article summarization, discovery, and retrieval workflows.
